Maria Montesi / presentation

12 November 2013, 7PM

Maria Montesi is an Italian artist based in Lille, France.
She is hosted for a research residency at the FKSE Studio Gallery in Budapest from the 28th of October to the 1st of December 2013, in the frame of a partnership with la Malterie (Lille) with the support of the Institut Français and the Région Nord-Pas de Calais.
In her practice, Maria Montesi explores the poetic potential that a space can offer both as a physical system and as a social one: a network of human relationships. Through the use of various media, she observes the ways in which a space is invested with meaning; a meaning that can be hijacked or even neglected by a given community.
Her research project in Budapest reflects her current interest in documentary film language and in the interview format as a conversation: a form of exchange able to offer narrative time.
During her residency period, she wishes to make use of her position as a stranger in the city of Budapest, in order to question the role of a visitor: What guides his/her trajectory while discovering a place? How does this poition define his/her relation to the Other? Through conversations with locals she wishes to be guided inside the city in order to make a self-made guide made up of collected personal histories.

« Being a spectator is not some passive condition that we should transform into activity. It is our normal situation […] Every spectator is already an actor in his story; every actor, every man of action, is the spectator of the same story »
