Sonic thoughts
opening: September 3, 2019. 7 pm.
Opening speech: Zsolt SŐRÉS
on view: September 3 – 21, 2019.
How can we think of sound today? What sort of materialist approaches of it exist alongside
one-another? This exhibition explores the basic ontological question of what is sound? from
the perspective of object oriented ontology. The approach is based on philosopher
Christopher Cox’s thought, embedded in the materialist discourse about sound as a medium.
The materialist interpretation of sound is not a new development; it has its roots in futurist
noise music, and the John Cage-influenced musique concrete also addressed its on
mediality. While the Cageian sound is a constant flux that precedes the listener, Pierre
Schaeffer’s sound object (object sonore) is a soundmatter that exists as an object and the
happenings linked to flux are interpreted as events. Their commonalitiy is the strictness of
their departure from sound, to think sonically, instead of thinking about sound. The exhibition
attempts to do just this.
