The Studio of Young Artists’ Association  is organising an annual series of exhibitions called Gallery by Night since 1991, offering a different exhibition every night for a full week in the Studio Gallery.
This year, the 20th Gallery by Night will feature not only Hungarian, but Czech, Slovakian, Polish and Romanian artists, whose works will be exhibited on nightly changing exhibitions, and for the first time this year, a video exhibition organised in the basement below the Gallery. Gallery by Night is prepared in cooperation with four institutions: FUTURA, Prague, SPACE, Bratislava, WRO Art Center, Wroclaw and the Studio of Young Artists’ Association.
The one-night-only exhibitions and the video exhibition center on a type of remembering on the historical past, that relates to the somewhat mutual past of Central Europe in an abstract way, concentrating more on formal attributes. Borrowing the phrase of flashbulb memory from Psychology, the focus is not on the events of the Socialist past, but on remembrance as research and understanding, as well as the gesture of reconstructing and newly constructing. The artworks approach the past from the perspective of analysis and research, not criticism, the past that inseparably mixes the personal memories of childhood and the political and social conditions of an indirectly experienced system. The furniture of personal spaces from the past, everyday objects, family photographs and amateur video footages will become the tools and sources of understanding, which help decode or reedit the past.

The exhibition aims to outline the collage-like, abstract nature of remembrance that is full of tonal shifts. These impressions and form-centric memories, however, will also reveal the unique relations the exhibiting artists have to their own past.
